Beginner Modern:
This beginning modern dance class is designed
to introduce non-dancers or beginner dancers to finding movement and
rhythm in their bodies in a nonjudgmental and fun way. Class consists
of a gentle, slow warm-up, exploring movement principles, such as round
and linear, fluid and percussive, expansive and isolated. The dance student
is made aware of anatomy and muscular support systems and learns how
to approach dance and movement in a practical and efficient way. The
second half of the class focuses on developing step patterns and movement
phrases that make use of the whole body as we move through space. This
class also prepares students to advance to the next level. Isabel has
taught beginner dancers and absolute beginners since 1995.
Intermediate/Advanced Modern:
This class takes takes the principles of
the Beginner class to the next level. Isabel seeks to create movement
based on knowledge of
the individual body and strong technique rather than traditional dance
vocabulary. She enjoys exploring different and unexpected ways to move.
Much of her movement is off-center and uses breath and rebound, focusing
on initiation and dynamic quality. The warm-up prepares the dancer to
interpret and execute Isabel’s movement in an individual way. Beginning
slowly standing in the center, dancers warm up spine and waist, focusing
on pelvis placement, before introducing more complicated patterns that
include range of motion, full body movement, direction changes and floor
work. Isabel recognizes the Simonson Technique, the Muller Technique
and the Pilates Method as strong influences. She believes firmly in artistic
expression through the body and continues to explore movement and create
work for her company, Isabel Gotzkowsky and Friends.
